Why mindset isn’t the most important thing when starting something new
I usually believe that mindset is crucial, and most people who know me and my work will be surprised by this statement that it isn’t the most important thing if you want to know how to start something new. No contradiction – I can reassure all of you. Especially for starting something new, another skill is more important than a positive mindset or attitude. It would be best if you were brave and confident foremost. A positive attitude supports your plans, but it is the action that makes them real. Mindset skills are a helpful supporting skill for new beginnings, but it is the first action that is critical because you have to deal with insecurity. In my opinion, there is no security at all, and this is not the result of frustration or negative experiences. I think security is a social construct to beat anxiety – and a construct for assurances to make money 😉
Intentions and goals are fundamental to manifest your new start. If you have specific goals, you are more likely to reach them, and you set yourself up for success. This strategy empowers your journey towards a new start. Read more about setting powerful goals here.
Motivation is the most important thing when starting something new because, with strong motivation, you keep the focus on your goals even if the path towards them isn’t always easy.
Confidence is the key
For every new or unfamiliar situation, you need a good portion of confidence. Confident behaviour is a personal skill you can learn, and you should practise it regularly to make it part of you. Have you ever wondered if those speakers on stages are born with confidence or if they have learned to be confident? Do you think someone is born confident, whereas you aren’t born with this unique gift? I don’t think so because I was unconfident myself, and I still am in some situations. Most people who talk to me cannot believe that, but I have learned to be confident, and I have strategies for new and challenging situations. Because of this, I think that everyone can learn some confident behaviour. It is individual in which amount but anyone can train it. The good thing is that not everybody has to be on a stage in front of thousands of people.
Get into the action and start something
For getting into action, it is critical to stop overthinking the process. Nothing has to be perfect. To get started, you need to take one single step out of your comfort zone, and you’ll experience that it works. Take one action after the other to start something new because this prevents procrastination and overwhelm.
Also, your energy is increasing when you are active towards your new goal.
how to start and Be consistent
Even if there are some setbacks (and they will occur), then focus on your goal and be consistent in reaching it. The motivation to match the new state will guide you through the hard times.
Regarding consistency, the mindset becomes more critical than in the beginning. Usually, starting something new is connected with a strong sense of new faces, which is positive and exciting and keeps you doing what you need to do. The harder it gets or the longer it takes to reach your goal, the weaker the feeling of actions becomes, which is where a strong motivation helps.
There are several strategies for surviving the middle stages of a transformation, but I like to focus on the vision and the motivational part. A strong image of your future helps you to stay on track and work your way beyond the starting phase throughout to your new goal. Remind yourself of the positive outcome and how your life will be better after you reached your destination. Repeat this every time you feel lost or want to quit because the journey is challenging.
For those of you who are easily bored after the starting phase, I recommend taking breaks regularly. Keep them short, e.g. a day or so, then you can simulate beginnings or starting steps. It is a simple but effective way to stay on track and go beyond the starting phase even if you are not in the mood to keep on doing the things you have to do for changing your life.
