If you don’t keep learning, you probably get stuck and end up feeling caught in your life. Learning can move you forward and brings in new opportunities. For example, if you want to change your working environment, it is essential to broaden your skills. You also can learn new skills to improve your existing career.
You may object that education is costly. This is true and, in my opinion, a big problem for education in society, but there are always solutions if you want to learn something new.
Today, there are a lot of possibilities to get well educated for every budget. Try out studying via a MOOC (‘massive open online course’) to begin with.
learn something new with MOOCs
Advantages of MOOCs:
One positive side of MOOCs is they are available for everyone and also affordable. An excellent course platform for MOOCs is Coursera. (Note: I’m not sponsored by Coursera, and I’m not their affiliate. This is just a MOOC resource that I can recommend because I like their programs). I did several courses on the platform. The best is, you can attend classes from various universities that you usually cannot afford easily.
Another positive aspect is that you haven’t that much pressure. Therefore you can reduce stress regarding taking exams because you study at your own pace. Most programs allow you to set back the deadlines in case you miss one. I like this feature because sometimes other tasks have higher priority. Life just happens, and with flexible deadlines, I can be more flexible, too. You can catch up whenever you spare some time.
Disadvantages of MOOCs:
No official certification is available. Some programs offer a paid certificate, but this isn’t accepted officially by many institutions. This is just a slight disadvantage if you love to learn something new, but it’s the wrong thing for you if you want to apply for a job.
You can get lost because there is no accountability. So, the possibility is high that you don’t finish your program.
Online Courses are a fun and easy way to learn something new
There are masses of online courses available these days. I love doing them, and gladly courses for all budgets are available everywhere. Most online courses are a great way to learn something new and to join new communities.
advantages of online courses
Most of them are affordable and fun to do. There are no kick-out exams or pressure creating task. You can do it at your own pace and can learn wherever you want to know, even on the go. So, online courses are very individual and progressive learning tools.
Although the advantages seem great, online courses also have some ‘dark sides’:
disadvantages of online courses
You don’t know what you get because there is no quality standard. Don’t think you’ll get scientifically proven facts. Most courses are grounded on personal experience and individual knowledge. This isn’t a bad thing at all, just mention it if you decide what and for which purpose you want to learn the new topic.
For example, I took an online course about building an online business, and it was great. If I wanted to get a job as a social media manager, this course wouldn’t provide a proper qualification. Indeed, you can try to start your own online business with such classes.
There are so many out there, which makes a choice very hard. If you are like me, you want all courses, but that isn’t a good decision, neither regarding time restrictions nor your budget. To get more clarity, write down your learning goals and choose the best course for your needs. Most course creators provide a list for whom the course is a good fit and for whom it isn’t.
Read a lot of books to learn something new
The easiest and maybe cheapest way to learn something new is to read a lot. If you aren’t a passionate reader, audiobooks are as good as physical books because it is about the content you learn and not how you know something new.
I quit the dissection in advantages and disadvantages for books because in my opinion, regarding books, only benefits exist. If you know any disadvantages of books, comment below.
