Sometimes staying positive is a challenge, not only during the dark times of winter but also in these weird pandemic time it is hard to stay in a positive mood. Personally, I love autumn because everything prepares for a more quiet time and nature appears so colorful. In winter, I miss the light. It’s getting dark so early and I feel as if everything is grey and cold… This massively challenges my optimism and my requirement for huge amounts of sleep! In sum, it’s harder to be positive and to prevent a somewhat depressive mood. It would be better to have a positive mindset, so we can better enjoy the cozy time of the year.

The question for those days is: how can we get out of the tired and negative mood and into a more positive way of thinking?

3 Tips for a positive Mindset

Music works as booster for me if it is a powerful beat. I listen to my favorite playlist with encouraging music. Let a bit of powerful music support you when establishing your positive mindset. So you build a helpful environment which makes it easier to stay positive.

1. Let the sunshine in and stay positive!

Like music, light has a similar effect for me. In these cloudy days it is so important to have enough light. I don’t care if it is natural light or artificial light. The main thing is that the rooms where I work and live are bright and illuminated. Most people laugh at me because I unconsciously switch on the lights when I enter a room because I always feel as if it is too dark in the inside. I understand that not everybody experiences darkness and light equally, but I mostly want to be „enlightened“ 😉 I think more light helps to be more awake and it supports concentration. Get out as often you can. The fresh air and the light is a boost for your mood! Short walks are enough to bring you up, if you haven’t got plenty of time.

If you cannot go outside (e.g. due to quarantine restrictions or something like that) a light-therapy bulb is a good first-aid tool. Those lights have various colors and each of them influences your mood in a certain way. I like light-therapy and use preferably red lights because they help in various situations and make me feel good.

2. Declutter Your Mind for staying positive

The goal is to get rid of your brain dump. Mostly, brain dump includes negative self-talk and pessimistic thoughts that affect your overall mood. Sometimes we aren’t aware how much negative thoughts we have. Because such thoughts are surrounding us unconsciously and in a permanent way. So, to feel better you should be able to stop the negative self-talk the sooner the better. Get it out of your head as soon as possible! As you already know, if you read my blog continuously (which I hope, you do), I like journaling. Personally, I prefer a daily morning journal which is similar to morning pages where you write free. If you lack time, you can journal if you feel that you need a vent, too. Customize and personalize your journaling regarding to your needs. You will feel lighter and less stressed after getting many thoughts out of your brain and this method helps you to stay positive as well. You see, it has multiple benefits.

3. Think Pink!

Colors do matter! I love to surround myself with bright colors because I think in dark times it helps me staying positive. I prefer not only my clothes colorful but also my makeup. More is more! Staying positive corresponds with your clothing and makeup. I believe this correlation because I experienced it by myself in quarantine. It was much easier to stay positive and happy during quarantine when I wore cool colorful clothes and a bright makeup! You are more productive if you dress yourself up than if you are at home with cozy clothes. Hard but true… I love my lounge wear and feel so cozy with it on the couch but it affects my productivity as well as my mood. One or two days of cozying around are fine but if you have to work dressing up is the key for success. The same is true for mood and positive thoughts. So think about your style if you struggle with staying positive or getting into a better mood!

This are my main tactics for staying positive during hard or dark times. I’d love to read about your own ideas so leave a comment below.
